My first survey

Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey, the world's leading questionnaire tool.

  • I think it's relevant because i can target my audience more effectively.
  • I have found it's easier to create surveys online ather than to approach someone with pen and paper.
  • This may not be as relevant to my production plans as i'd hoped as it only gives me background information on what people know but i can use that to my advantage to play with the ideas of what people know and prefer.
  • The process is effective because it's incredibly efficient and fast.

Using Slideshare for reaserch in to film noir

  • This particular presentation gives us a good look in to the conventions of a film noir.
  • It shows us there is more to the making of a film noir than what we see
  • I can use this for tips whilst creating my opening sequence.

  • This presentation gives us more background information on the characters and histor of film noir
  • It gives me a better idea on how to form a stronger chaacter for my opening sequence

Film Noir Prezi

Audience expectations from genre

It is important that as producers we understand what our target audience expect from a film
clear understanding will ensure that our time is used effectively devising and creating a text that out TA will enjoy and want to see.

The best way to understand what they want is through research and use of some kind of market research to elicit opinions from a sample TA.

For the film industry unit i experimented with creating research instruments - I liked survey monkey and found it easy to use, so for this unit I created a survey to find out how much people really knew about Film Noir.

I went on to find out people's opinions, I spoke to them one to one about what they thought of Film Noir, what they liked and what they disliked, there weren't any really negative reactions but i didn't find this way of resarching very useful because i couldn't log peoples opinions down when i was speaking to them face-to-face.

Here is my survey

Genre specific language

I wanted to ensure that i understand the key elements of the genre and the generic pleasures associated with the Film Noir experience

I want to ensure that my film uses:

Melodramamtic lighting;
Chiaroscuro lighting features prominently in film noirs, it is about creating an effect which shows language through a more visual performance. Chiaroscuro is a good way of showing negative and positive emotions through what we see.

Canted Angles;
This angle is often used to suggest imbalance and instability in the shot, we will be using canted angles in our piece for dramatic effect.

Smoke and Fog;
This is used to create an eerie tension in the piece and also to over dramatise the scene, we will be using smoke in our OTS but unlikely that we will be using fog as we aren't doing any lengthy set time of filming outside.

Femme Fatale and Anti Hero
Conventionally these characters are used as the story tellers, they are the main characters who create the stir within the story, we are using two femme fatale's in our OTS so they we change slightly from the original conventions.

Expressionist; Expressionism
This is used within film noir's to stir emotion within the audience, for example when someone dies, how we react to that, do we feel sad because of their death or do we empathise with the murderer?

Modality;
This refers to how close the producer intends a text to being realistic.We are hoping our OTS will be realistic, but the drastic actions permitted by the femme fatales shows an underlying horror being the idea of 'realism'

Links to fan-site

I researched into film noir fan sites, and came across some interesting sites which are still active today, showing me that film noir is in fact still popular in the present day. Researching enabled me to enhance my understanding of the conventions of the genre, representations of characters and different ways in which directors and film-makers have challenged or amplified generic pleasures and conventions.

http://film-noir.gemzies.com/
This site is useful for people who aren't very knowledgeable on this genre and is open to a wide variety of people. I liked this site because it offered a simple layout and was very straight forward, it also included links to other sites which the audience may find helpful to browse and it also felt very open to people who don't know a lot about film noir.

http://www.filmnoirfoundation.org/
This site seems more professionally designed, and seems to have a lot more of the facts, this site seems more reliable to collect facts and information from, the only thing i found with this site was that it featured slightly more difficult language to previous sites i've visited.

http://www.film-noir-alley.com/
This site follows the conventional layout and colour scheme of film noir's, I really like this site because it was so easily accessible, i found it easy to use and find what i was looking for however i did find this site very basic in parts, with not a lot of information to offer.

Examples of hit film noir films..
